What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a holistic touch therapy based on the same principles of acupuncture but using hands instead of needles. It aims to balance the body’s energy system by the use of gentle pressure on pathways called meridians and relevant acupuncture points.

Shiatsu is compatible with orthodox medical treatments and is particularly helpful in stress related conditions, helping to release tension and promote deep relaxation.

Commonly Treated Conditions

Shiatsu can help a wide range of conditions, from specific injuries to more general symptoms and it is excellent for maintaining well-being.  It is a deeply relaxing experience which works at the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels.  Regular sessions help to prevent the build up of stress in daily life.

A recent systematic review of clinical trials show that Shiatsu and Acupressure are effective in a wide range conditions. These include:

Background to Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a traditional natural healing therapy developed in Japan, where it has been used for centuries to promote health and alleviate sickness. The roots of shiatsu lie in Traditional Oriental Medicine, originating in China over 5,000 years ago with the development of acupuncture.

How Does Shiatsu Work?

In the same way that Western Medicine recognizes that blood and lymph flow through separate channels circulating within the body, oriental medicine acknowledges a network of channels, called meridians, through which energy flows.  This vital energy is said to move blood and lymph.

For many reasons this energy can stop flowing freely and this may then produce physical symptoms or illness, as well as emotional, psychological or spiritual disharmony.

The central concept of shiatsu is to enable this energy to flow around your body more easily, which then leads to improved blood circulation, endorphin release and the elimination of toxins.  Shiatsu works on the whole body by stimulating the meridians, bringing energy to where it is needed, and dispersing it from where it is congested.

By applying pressure to meridians and acupressure points, the flow of energy improves, your body begins to repair itself and all major systems begin to function better. Over time, your body feels rejuvenated, calmer and more energised.
